Magic Casements closes
Alas, Magic Casements will not be happening in 2007. The NSW Writers Centre has decided to shut down its genre-specific festivals (the Romance Writers Festival has also bitten the dust) as it loses money on them. It can apparently no longer afford to keep doing so.

This is a big disappointment. Magic Casements was a good festival, in many ways the closest Sydney had to a large-scale SF convention. I for one enjoyed each and every one of them. I don't blame the NSWWC for closing it down; they seem to be running on a tighter budget lately, and of course a loss-making event is unsustainable.

However, where a casement closes, a door sometimes opens. There remains an option to organise a "private" event at the NSWWC (meaning an event that the NSWWC itself doesn't organise, but just provides the venue). The NSWWC has hinted it might be able to assist in some ways, possibly even subsidising the costs. Perhaps this is a chance to turn Magic Casements into something new. I intend to explore this avenue thoroughly.

Your thoughts and suggestions, dear readers, are welcome.

Hey Chris sorry to hear about the Magic Casements shutting down. I just gave it a plug on the Naked Novelist podcast thingy whatsit.

I think a private event using the NSWWC is a great idea, especially if they can help. I think you can rely on the Canberra people for assistance.

I'm sorry I never got to a Magic Casements - I was invited several times (sadly the kind of invite that does not come with a plane ticket, but still) but kept having various disasters/major events/babies (okay, just one) that meant it was impractical.

I'd be interested to see what comes next.

That is sad news!!! I really enjoyed the MCs I attended.

I'm all for putting together a con in Sydney, and the centre is a lovely venue. I'd be happy to help out in any capacity you can think of, so drop me a line if I can be of use.
